Meet the 2016/2017 Coaches for South Dakota United
Coach Chris Derry:
Coach Derry has been coaching for 17 years at all levels of youth soccer. Coach Derry began coaching in Pierre in 2000 for both CASA and the YMCA youth league. From there Coach Derry was asked to coach the Pierre JV soccer team in 2001 where he was a coach for 2 years before taking over the Varsity Boys program in 2003. As a first year coach Coach Derry took the Pierre 2003 boys varsity team as an 8th seed into the state tourney where his team beat the #1 seed and undefeated Roosevelt Roughriders in the first round 1-0 and then repeated the same score in the 2nd round beating the 4th seed Spearfish Spartans before making the championship game. There the boys fell to a very good and #2 ranked Aberdeen boys team 3-1. This would prove as a launching pad for Coach Derry where over the next 3 years he would lead the Pierre boys program to 2 State Championships and 1 3rd place finish. Over the next 4 years the Pierre Governors were a mainstay at the top of the rankings never finishing the regular season outside the top 2 before heading into the state tourneys. During this time Coach Derry helped to develop the Oahe FC program in Pierre while also starting what is now the South Dakota United program. During his club coaching years Coach Derry, along with the help of many great assistant coaches and parents, has lead several teams to the USYS State Championships and then onto the Regional tournaments all over Region II. Coach Derry has close to 20 State Championships as a head coach which he says is a direct result to A LOT of great kids that he has had the great honor to coach. Coach Derry is the only coach in SD who has ever taken a SD team to a National Championship series and won the National Championship. The same year he did this, the SDU Legacy girls also won the USYS President’s Cup and also competed in the USYS National Presidents Cup coached by Jason Bartels. Coach Derry is married to his wonderful wife Jenny and they have a son together, Rylan.
