The newly formed South Dakota United Crew team started their 2015-2016 season with a trip to Omaha/Council Bluffs area to play in the Halloween Havoc. The team was placed in the top flight to play against 3 of the top five teams from the Nebraska Premier League.
First game: SDU Crew 2, Papillion Predatori 5
Goals for the Crew were scored by a beautiful long distance shot by winger Corrin B and a PK by striker Thai S. There were a lot of positives to take from the first game of the teams season but also mistakes to be learned from. The game saw a strong effort from the entire team but due to the mistakes the effort wasn’t rewarded with a result.
Second game: SDU Crew 0, Tri State Revolution 6
There were no goals to be had in the game for the Crew team but many chances that went unrewarded! The Tri State team capitalized on their size and quickness in the attack to get the victory. The SDU boys showed some growth against a much stronger side than the first game but the poor scheduling of this event ultimately led to the loss. The SDU Crew members were only given 30 minutes between games to rest while the Tri State team rested and waited for their match against them. The fresher legs proved to be the story of the game and was obvious from everyone watching.
Third game: SDU Crew 0, Magellan U14 Premier 3
The final game of the tournament for the Crew was against the undefeated Magellan team who had beaten both Papillion (3-0) and Tri State (2-0). The Magellan team proved to be the best team SDU saw the entire weekend, but the players for the Crew were up to the task. The game was a 0-0 draw at half time with Magellan having more of the run of play but opportunities to score were had by both teams. Midway through the 2nd half the Magellan team finally broke through with a very well placed 25 yard rip from their center mid to make it 1-0. SDU didn’t stop playing though as they pushed to try and get an equalizer but just couldn’t. With less than 2 min left in the game Magellan finally pushed through for a 2nd goal and then with no time on the clock got the final one to make it 3-0. This was by far the best performance for the SDU Crew even though it resulted in a loss. Defensively the boys played a great game led by keeper Justin S and Center backs Cade G and Carter W. Other players who contributed to the effort were Gabe N, Tristan B, Nathan S, Kale D, Zac M, Corrin B, Payton A and Max M.
On the weekend as a whole Coach Chris Derry felt that the team really grew and started coming together. For being placed in the top flight against the competition that they were, the boys really didn’t do too bad. There were going to be mistakes made as there always is with a new team, but the mistakes became less and less as the games went on. There truly were a lot of positives to take away from the weekend but the biggest positive to take away was that the boys began to gel and become a team. Coach Derry is very excited about the future for this group of boys and as they grow, they will become a team that could do some very good things!
Great job SDU Crew and keep working hard because it will end up paying off on the field.
