SDU Athletico takes Championship in Gretna

In the first tourney action of the year for SDU the SDU Athletico girls participated in the Gretna Centris Cup in Gretna, NE.  The girls kicked off their first match of the tourney with a hard fought 1-0 win over a team from Papillion, the 2007 Grey Wolves.  The game was a defensive battle with much of the action happening in the middle part of the park.  The Athletico girls capitalized on a defensive lapse by Papillion and scored the games only goal.  In the 2nd game the girls found their groove and cruised to a resounding 7-0 win over HFC Eclipse from Grand Island.  Goals came from several players but the stand out performance was the dominance on the defensive side of the ball.  Not one player but the entire team of defenders and keeper helped to keep the ball on the other end of the field for the girls to have several scoring chances in this match!  In the 3rd match of bracket play the girls played the homeside Gretna Prima Gold 07G.  The Gretna girls finally scored a goal on the Athletico girls but it proved to be not nearly enough as the girls again cruised to a 9-1 match win.

In the Championship the girls played the home side in their division, Gretna Prima White 07G.  The game proved to be Championship worthy as the final score was a tight 3-1 win for the SDU Athletico girls!  This game saw several momentum changes but in the end the Athletico girls proved to have too much horsepower as they kept Gretna on their heels much of the game.  Coach Chris said it was a “great weekend of soccer” played by the girls and that for the first tourney of the year “it was a great way to start and hope that it leads to great things for these girls this year”.

Great job girls on a well played tourney!
